UBTV

Head Editor

In the 2022-23 academic year I was the Head Editor for the University of Bristol's student-led television, UBTV - with over 6k followers on YouTube.

Part of my role was to supervise, help, and manage all the editors in the society, make suggestions, and lead workshops to improve the editing skills in Premiere Pro and DaVinci of the members of the society

We started the year creating intros for our videos - I created the one for Nightlife videos and supervised the permanent editor's creating the News and Entertainment one. I made two different versions for the Head of Nightlife to choose, and, as we were going for a more home-made video style, we chose the second option.

I also created the outro for all of our videos:

We also made a crowdfunding campaign to fund a new Mac for editing, and I edited this video for the campaign:

And here are some of the videos I have edited for our YouTube channel, sit back and have a look at them!

UBTV produced visual content under three Departments: News, Entertainment and Nightlife. Each department had different aesthetics, purpose and approaches, hence, the editing had to adapt to each. Whilst the News videos demanded a more informative approach - allowing diverse opinions to have equal space on screentime without subjective montage influencing reception- the Entertainment and Nightlife videos allowed a more playful editing, with montage to enhance funny situations and showcase the buzziness of the student nights out.

It was crucial to work closely with the Department Head, producers and presenters of each video to understand their vision.  Meetings before and after editing were allocated to receive "editing briefs” and feedback and amend changes. This was a valuable commissioned editing experience, as personal style had to be balanced with the brand/producer’s vision, and learning to take on constructive feedback to improve edits.

As UBTV has an open membership, all members can participate in producing, presenting or editing. This meant that there were different editors for different videos.

Since UBTV uploaded weekly content to keep a consistent presence and engagement, I had to ensure all videos had an editor allocated and were ready to upload when planned. Before taking over, UBTV had a condensed spreadsheet listing projects and stages, however, it was visually overwhelming and people often lost track of what videos were being edited and even deadlines. Hence, I refined the spreadsheet into a visual calendar using a Gantt Chart and Kanban Board approach - showcasing timelines available to shoot and edit videos, confirming editors knew their deadlines, and spotting any gaps in content or editors available.

As many members were new to editing, I conducted workshops and personal tutorials to teach the basics of editing and support them in their edits. I conducted two editing workshops (one for Premiere Pro and another for DaVinci Resolve) for members to familiarise themselves with the software. I did focused both on the technical aspects of editing but also on the creative scope and considerations - preaching about the power of constructing a narrative through montage, the use of Kuleshov effect to enhance funny moments or association of ideas, how to grasp attention since the beginning, and the importance of adapting to each videos’ topic and needs.

I created an “Editing Guideline” for anyone editing to have a reference of the basics to follow and allow delegation. It outlined recommendations on how to approach style for each different department, how to arrange UBTV’s logo, intros and outro; and reminding to check colour and sound. This also ensured all videos had brand consistency and a similar technical basis.

Conducting one-to-one tutorials was valuable to hone my communication and teaching skills, but it also taught me a lot from seeing other people’s approaches to editing and getting an insight into their work in progress.

Finally, when editors had finished their edits, I would quality check them to approve or provide constructive feedback to improve any aspect, making me critically analyse work and be assertive.
