INNOVATION

My degree at University consisted of Film and TV with the addition of an integrated masters in Innovation.

This ‘Innovation’ side of my degree consists of developing innovative solutions through user-oriented design to “come up with the right solutions to the right problems”. Each year, we would group in multi-disciplinary teams to embark on a term-long project where we would look at a problem area to find a wicked problem worth solving and come up with a product or service to solve it. Through these projects, we were taught about Design Thinking and Lean Start-up frameworks to approach user-oriented research and design, as well as a wide range of tools and methodologies to collect and analyse data, insights and ideas.

Working with multidisciplinary teams was enriching to gain a bigger perspective and expand my ideas through the contribution of other fields’ knowledge, countering preconceptions. Initial conversations with the team about each member’s strengths and weaknesses was always useful to allocate roles and ensure everyone could have the support they needed and share expected outcomes to ensure alignment and equal work input. In projects, we used a shared virtual whiteboard, Miro, to visualise key findings and facilitate collaboration through the use of virtual post-it notes and a fluid form of writing down information.
